  • “When I arrive at Miss Tess’ Studio I feel happy because she is going to teach me something interesting and challenging at the same time.”
    — Elke, age 9

  • “Miss Tess has a totally fancy house, she believes in fairies, she does fun stuff and she lets you draw pictures! She has lots of interesting books that you can look at after your lesson. She is a fantastic artist. She has 2 pianos...a tiny red one and a large brown one. We hope you like her. I enjoy her a lot, but she does have a thinking cap and has a work mode for you. I think she is a great teacher!“

  • “I’ve been practicing with Miss Tess for about 4 years, and I enjoy it because it’s cool knowing you can play an instrument which a lot of other people wish they could. I am proud of my two recitals that I have done which Miss Tess organized for her students. My favorite pieces to perform were Harry Potter, James Bond, and my own original composition, Kola. Miss Tess is a good teacher because she does not talk to/treat her students like little toddlers.”
    — Sam, age 10

  • “I usually bring my stuffed wolf or cat to lessons and it’s kinda like practicing for group events because the animals are my audience. Miss Tess’ husband Sean bows to me and sometimes I bow back.

Miss Tess chooses the pieces that go in your spiral book that you’ll play and sometimes I get to choose what goes in it, too (after two months of begging). After every lesson you get a sticker and you can put it on the cover.

In piano you might feel really excited about your piece, and then annoyed with your piece, and then anger and sadness and more annoyance (I find that a big one), but then you find your way out and you’re really happy and hopeful and there’s a feeling of accomplishment, just like how I learned to do flips today in gymnastics! It’s worth it because you always make it in the end and you get to learn a new piece (p.s. I’m really good at my piece). Miss Tess encourages me to keep going and she doesn’t say, “Okay, that’s good enough, move it for my next student.” I always go home with something new in my head and I never leave with an empty head.

Miss Tess is really nice and the studio is really fun and the group events are amazing and you get little bags that include decorations. I would tell my friends to take lessons here!”

Teenage Student Reviews

  • “I’ve been playing piano with Miss Tess for 7 years. One thing I love about Miss Tess is the way she gives feedback: she always tells a story; she connects to something she or I have experienced in the past. That helps make our lessons more meaningful and adds more heart to piano as a whole. When you’re at the studio, you don’t just learn your instrument - you learn about life lessons. Miss Tess is an Everything Teacher: I’ve learned about Greek mythology, financial education, and even email etiquette! I’ve used her teachings in money management to create my own website and sell some of my art online. Miss Tess’s studio is a great place to learn and grow in a music community. “
    — Raya, age 14

  • “I’ve been at Miss Tess’ studio since I was seven years old, and I am now a freshman in high school. During this time I’ve taken over 300 lessons from her. One of my favorite things about my lessons with Miss Tess is the way she works fun into the session. She is able to make even the most difficult music theory seem enjoyable. Her knowledge of music theory is immense and she is able to explain it in a way that I can understand easily. Through our years together we’ve gotten to know each other well. I’ve found the student/teacher relationship to be the very best part of taking lessons with Miss Tess. We’ve come a long way together and I’m looking forward to many more years!”
    — Natalie, age 15

  • “I love Miss Tess' creative teaching strategy. It has that spark of fun that she balances out with work so at every practice we get multiple things done. I've learned a lot of life lessons such as patience, control, and reaching goals as well as many challenging piano pieces. She has really helped me with my rhythm and working with my arch nemesis, the metronome.”
    — Yvette, age 13

  • “I have been taking lessons with Miss Tess since I was eight. Now I am fifteen. Now I’m one of the oldest students and my journey here has been an enjoyable one. I have progressed a lot as a pianist, from being only able to play one-note-at-a-time pieces, to playing complex pieces with care. After I graduate I don’t know exactly what I am going to do, but my time in the studio has taught me skills that will help me no matter what I do. In my time here, I have done many things I am proud of, such as completing the 30 Songs Challenge and getting the prize, making it through lockdown where the Zoom meetings helped me “think inside the box.” And I have learned about myself, my limits, my strengths, and my weaknesses. I haven’t missed a single performance or group event. Parts of my journey have been hard, but both those and the good times have taught me lessons I will take into the future.”
    — Blaine, age 15

  • “Miss Tess is magical. I don’t think I need to say any more.”
    — Ben, age 15

  • “I've been a student of Tess’ for almost a decade, and will be graduating next year both from high school and the studio. I full-heartedly endorse the studio experience to anyone considering learning piano. I started taking piano lessons when I was about 8, and have to say that growing up in the studio community has taught me greater self-assurance & responsibility along with musical ability. Having piano as an outlet is an incredible resource, music has always helped me to process my emotions and clear my head. Tess is amazing at finding a student’s strengths and helping them achieve their goals, as well as pushing us out of our comfort zone to discover new interests. Our community at the studio is built on respect and collaboration, Tess offers the opportunity to participate in groups of other students to share what we have learned and celebrate each other's accomplishments. The opportunity to perform publicly, both in these groups and during our recitals, helps develop public speaking skills and individual confidence. I truly believe the studio has shaped me to be a thoughtful thinker and a confident musician. Miss Tess’s Music Studio is a wonderful place to develop your musical ability, and I am proud to have grown up within its community.

In 2019, the year of my quinceañera, I was gifted an incredible antique concert piano by Tess and Sean's aunt Beth. She had decided it was time to pass the piano on, and asked Tess if any students were interested. I have been told that Beth once said she was “happy to keep it in the family," which made my heart absolutely glow! I'm honored to be a part of this family. Before receiving the piano I had been playing on a keyboard, the transition has allowed me to find new depth in my love for piano and play more complex pieces. I am eternally grateful for their generosity, and will forever hold their gift as a symbol of the time I've spent in the studio.

Tess’s financial education program within the studio began around the same time as I started my lessons, making me part of the first generation to grow up with a consistent dose of money conversations. From these lessons, I feel much more capable of spending my earnings responsibly, a skill I found valuable when I started earning my first paychecks. Most of the lessons Tess and I explored were based on the concept of heart currency, essentially the exchange of effort and emotional investment. Tess emphasized the idea that heart currency should be met with actual currency, and helped me understand how to identify situations where I could be taken advantage of.

While the journey I am about to embark on after graduation sometimes intimidates me, I honestly feel better prepared to confront this new independence because of my time with Miss Tess. I will take the many skills I have learned in the studio with me; multitasking, persistence, confidence, organization, and self-compassion.”

  • “I am very happy to have found Miss Tess as a piano teacher! After many years of lessons as a child I decided to come back as an adult to recapture the skills I had lost. I have been pleasantly surprised by her style of teaching which has allowed me to experience the piano in a new way. She has a very organic approach, which is much different than my tedious piano lessons of the past. Miss Tess has also tailored the pace of her teaching to fit my schedule where we can progress steadily without intense pressure. She is by far the best teacher I have had and I would recommend her to all ages and skill levels!”
    — Erinn, adult student

  • “What a fantastic teacher! I come from a rock/pop background, and it's been amazing to have my butt handed to me week after week by a classical choir singer. I'm also really fascinated by music theory, so Tess has been really flexible with the content of our lessons, sometimes dedicating entire sessions to theory, ear training, rhythm, etc. What's most amazing is that all this choir-girl practice has helped my rock-star alter ego!”

  • “I had been half-heartedly looking for a piano instructor in the neighborhood for reasons I couldn’t understand myself, for I always thought of the piano as, among musical instrument personae, someone between stodgy and conceited, although I liked listening to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and all. I also imagined piano lessons to be drab, where I saw in my mind’s eyes the back profile of a tiny child (for some reason), sitting upright and uptight, trying and trying to perfect her skills until she realizes she is bored and unmotivated, eventually reaching a point where she stops the practice altogether to pursue another time-killer.

If not a misstatement, “She is a good teacher” is a grave understatement. Miss Tess is not a good teacher – she is an astonishingly good teacher. A pedagogue extraordinaire, master of her craft. I am a language teacher of more than two decades, and I know a good educator when I see one. So, I latch onto her teaching and soak up her lesson.

What makes her a pedagogue extraordinaire? – She is strict. A stickler to rules, a demander, a collector, and a taskmaster. But she is more than that. She wants the impossible from her students. For stronger muscles to grow, the muscle fibers need to micro-tear, and the repairs during the briefly following resting periods “grow” the muscles. Then a well-deserved, perfected jump. No wild-haired, crazy rudderless hops to injure your muscles. Miss Tess helps her students understand that how high their mind aims is how high their eyes will go, thus the ultimate height of the ball they throw. But, by small increments. With continual daily repetition. She puts this indubitable, time-tested growth principle into her teaching practice.

Miss Tess’ lessons are regimented, online or in person. Oh, how I anticipate our lessons like a child waiting for a fieldtrip! But why? Because Miss Tess is a master of her craft. There is no room for boringness or being lost. Each activity is a step toward new goals, and learning to her and her students means having a good time. Beautifully engrossing are her events throughout the year, and especially enthralling are the Witching Hour and Winter Forest events, which lead you to fantasy-esque theatric sets and fantastical stories, and behind them, fantastic people. It is a thrill to meet the inner worlds of other students, whose spirits are so free, minds so creative, plan so meticulous, practice so assiduous, and their final execution so splendid and perfect. What makes this enchantment possible if not Miss Tess’ professionalism, instinct and foresight, and most distinctively, her negotiation skills? She feels her students and is able to superbly negotiate the rhythm of their advancement, the techniques to assign for them to master, and the scale of the jumps she can demand from them. All with wonderfully personal artistry. Miss Tess is my Yoda, my hero.

    Do I recommend her lessons?”

Studio Guardian Reviews

  • “Our daughter has loved music since she was a baby. She began exploring piano as a toddler on a tiny red floor piano and sitting alongside as her grandmother played piano. She began taking lessons with Miss Tess 163 lessons ago. In that time, she has progressed into a beautiful, creative, and confident musician under Tess's tutelage. Miss Tess teaches more than piano. Our daughter has learned how to manage her time, set goals, reflect on her work and self, push through challenges, ask for help, and most importantly has learned that she can do hard things. Miss Tess understands our daughter and honors her creativity and unique learning style. She knows when to push, when to support, and when to celebrate. Our daughter loves going to lessons, regularly asks for extra time with Miss Tess, and sees her as a role model. We cannot speak highly enough about our experience with Miss Tess.”

  • “8 years ago, on a walk in our neighborhood I saw a sign in a yard about Miss Tess’ Music Studio that caught my eye. I’m so glad I followed my intuition and reached out to Miss Tess to start lessons for my then 7 year old daughter, and myself - I would also be a beginner and wanted to learn alongside her. My daughter is now entering high school, and although I stopped my own weekly lessons after 3 years, the experience of being both a studio student, in addition to a studio parent, is one I really cherish. Miss Tess creates a unique learning environment tailored for each student. It’s a special combination of tutoring and mentoring that enriches. Miss Tess’s students learn how to set big goals, and achieve them, with grace and grit. The experiences in the studio translate beyond into life, in so many ways.

We recently attended a Seattle Chamber Music Society performance, where a world renowned pianist and violinist played a beautiful program in an intimate space. I watched their poise, their heartfelt introductions to each piece, and of course their artistry while playing - and I thought, Miss Tess’s students are truly peers of these professional musicians. Each student is playing their personal best, and has been given a foundation to share their music and hard work. Thank you, Miss Tess!”

  • “Tess has a magical ability to match a student’s creativity with the appropriate structure to develop a young person’s piano technique and positive practice habits. Our daughter always looks forward to her weekly lesson and often expresses her excitement during the car ride to Tess’ studio. Tess channels that excitement into making music.”

  • “My daughter joined the Miss Tess Studio community when she was in first grade. She has been involved with the studio for 6 years. Learning to play the piano is only the tip of the iceberg of what she has gained from the studio. Tess is organized, diligent, comprehensive and soul-filled. She imparts all of these outstanding qualities to her students through her teachings. Not only will your young person learn to play piano, they will also have the support of an entire community, complete with holiday events, recitals and a lending library! If you and your young person are ready to take a deep dive into the world of piano, this is the place to be.”
    — Beth, studio parent

  • “Miss Tess possesses a rare combination of affectionate sweetness and a clear passion for creative discipline. Our daughter adores her and practices her lessons as much as anything to earn her continuing approval. Miss T is a magician!”

  • “Tess unlocked the artistic ability that was inside our son Alex's autism and has helped him find a way to express his unique skills and give himself something that he can take pride in and call his own. She accomplished this by applying her artistic skills with her ability to know and understand Alex — nurturing his talents, teaching him life skills, celebrating him for who he is, and also holding him accountable for his work and his behavior. His artwork is remarkable, demonstrating what Alex CAN do with hard work and dedication, rather than assuming that he can't. We are very grateful for the difference Tess has made in Alex's life journey, and in ours as well. It is a gift that Alex will carry with him the rest of his life.”

  • “My daughter has been studying piano with Miss Tess since kindergarten (with a few months’ hiatus while we adjusted to pandemic-style learning). In addition to teaching the fundamentals of piano technique, Miss Tess supports my daughter's creativity (while keeping her focused) and encourages her to think about her learning process and about what is happening in the music. She has tailored her approach to fit my daughter's needs and interests; for example, Miss Tess added a piece to my daughter's repertoire because my daughter was very enthusiastic about learning it, but modified the piece to better match my daughter's level of proficiency.

Several times a year, Miss Tess gives students opportunities through group sessions to present pieces they have been working on, along with their thoughts about the music. This gives the students a chance to observe others at different stages of learning, in a supportive environment. Even though many of the lessons and the group sessions have had to occur virtually because of the pandemic, my daughter still feels that she is part of a group, and at random moments will talk about music that the other students played and how it made her feel. I feel that this sense of cohesiveness is due in great part to Miss Tess’s ability to create a positive, non-competitive group atmosphere, even remotely.

On the logistical side, she is very good at communicating expectations both for practice between lessons, and for ensuring that the studio runs smoothly. I highly recommend Miss Tess!”

  • “Our two daughters have been working with Miss Tess for the last six years and we appreciate Tess’s ability to relate to our girls on multiple levels. While providing a strong background in music theory, Miss Tess has also encouraged the girls to step out of their comfort zones and explore other creative and educational avenues such as Art and Latin. Miss Tess’s deep understanding of and ability to relate to young people across multiple disciplines is truly amazing. Tess has instilled in our girls a strong work ethic and the knowledge that hard work is fulfilling and rewarding. Tess’s subtle yet consistent instruction in self-worth and empowerment has provided a great foundation from which our girls can navigate the waters of life. Miss Tess is so much more than a piano teacher and we can’t thank her enough.”

  • “Miss Tess has consistently delivered, not only with her passion for knowledge and teaching, but her creativity in providing an encouraging and challenging environment that responds to her students’ needs and skills. For more than two decades, I have witnessed her deep and focused teaching style that inspires and commands engagement. Tess employs a powerful artistry in teaching, connecting with her students’ interests, involvement, and trusting them to meet her in the hard work they do together. Passive learning is not allowed in her studio. The progress of her studio and students has always reflected this excellence.”
